‘Eras of Music History – Modern Times (1/4)’

Presented by Signed Media, C Major Entertainment & ZDF/Arte

The 20th century is a century of extremes: technical revolutions and two World Wars. Challenged by Jazz, classical music became a weapon of reaction, but also a vision of modernity. Visual artists also established impressionism and expressionism to new aesthetic parameters. Composers like Schoenberg, Berg, and Gerschwin broke away from traditional forms and challenged the listening habits of the audience. The Nazi terror forced the elite of western music to immigrate and coincidentally supplied Hollywood with the most talented film composers, including Igor Stravinsky, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Sergei Rachmaninov. The great conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christian Thielemann, and star singers like Maria Callas, Pavarotti, Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann turn the music of the old masters into mega events. The highlights of the season in New York, Milan, Bayreuth and Salzburg, are very important social events and not to be missed by the elite. Together with organ virtuoso Cameron Carpenter, and several star-studded appearances, the film "Eras of Music History - Modernity" discovers the last 100 years of European music history. Includes further interviews and excerpts from the following Artists: Anna Prohaska, Paavo Järvi, Daniel Hope, Jamie Cullum, Moritz Eggert, Renée Fleming, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Avi Avital, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Leonard Bernstein, Wolfgang Rihm, and Yoko Ono.
