Market Screening ‘Georges Bizet: Carmen’
Presented by BCE Films
In Stephan Märki's interpretation, Carmen is a woman who longs for death and stages sex as a weapon of power. In a world hungry for life, the power to seduce is a strength, but devotion brings downfall. Love and Death are embodied by a dancer who mirrors Carmen's thoughts, feelings and desires. The conductor, Mario Venzago, draws upon the research into Carmen by musicologist Fritz Oeser, who has restored Bizet's original version, giving new depth to the piece and the well-known songs. Philipp Fürhofer's stage design places the actors in a mirrored cabinet, creating a variety of symbols.
