SCHEDULE
Online Preparation Module
30 April + 7 May 2025
This two-day online preparation course provides participants with foundational insights and techniques essential for capturing dance and ballet for broadcast. The first day introduces course objectives, followed by a lecture from Peter Maniura on crafting camera scripts to enhance storytelling and choreography, complete with real-world examples. Thomas Freundlich and Valtteri Raekallio then discuss collaborating with choreographers to capture dance effectively. Students share short clips of their own work or admired dance coverage, sparking group analysis and feedback. On the second day, Myriam Hoyer delves into multi-camera capture techniques and collaboration strategies, complemented by an introduction to Helsinki’s Dance House. The course concludes with a review of filming basics and a briefing on the creative challenge awaiting in Helsinki, including each student’s assigned dance duet for further preparation.
Day 1 / Tuesday, 10 June
Participants arrive at Dance House Helsinki for registration, followed by a welcome lunch with the IMZ team, faculty, and Dance House staff. The day’s sessions provide an orientation to the workshop, including a presentation of the overall plan and introductions where participants share their professional experiences. Afterward, there’s a guided tour of the Dance House facilities, and attendees meet the dancers and technical team, preparing for the upcoming days.
Day 2 / Wednesday, 11 June - Ballet pas de deux day
This day is dedicated to ballet, with student directors working in pairs to rehearse and record ballet pas de deux in the main hall. Throughout the morning, the first group of students has the chance to direct and observe performances, later engaging in a feedback session where they review and discuss the morning’s work together.
Day 3 / Thursday, 12 June - Contemporary duet day
The focus shifts to contemporary dance. Following a similar format to Day 2, students direct new duets with contemporary dancers, allowing the second group to apply what they’ve learned. At the end of the day, they prepare for the following day’s group exercise by watching a video of the group dance choreography and discussing it with Valtteri Raekallio.
Day 4 / Friday, 13 June - Group dance day
In groups, students collaborate to develop and produce a recorded dance package featuring a group dance performance with four contemporary dancers. They explore techniques like multi-camera and single-camera setups, integrating interviews as part of their creative project. The day involves planning, rehearsing, and filming the group projects, with each team allocated dedicated time to work with the dancers.
Day 5 / Saturday, 14 June
The final day is a reflective and evaluative session. Participants and faculty members come together for a final discussion and farewell.
