About the IMZ Academy

The IMZ Academy is an initiative started in 2013 that brings together professionals in the field of cultural film production, fostering intensive experience exchange, hands-on knowledge transfer and development of industry-specific skills.
Experienced practitioners and renowned experts of the industry – film producers, broadcasters, distributors, cinema and new media professionals – share their know-how in a series of highly practical, immersive and detailed master classes, courses, workshops and lectures examining best practice in performance capture, the latest technologies in capture, streaming and editing, editorial curation, how to reach audiences, as well as covering legal and business/financial aspects of cultural film production and distribution.

The IMZ Academy is designed to address young professionals initiating their career in the audio-visual industry, as well as established market players that seek for knowledge in specific areas:
One objective of the IMZ Academy is to support the professionalization of the younger generation in the performing arts film area through peer-to-peer communication, and the work on concrete projects and to serve as a career and mobility springboard for young talents. The second objective is to offer specific state-of-the-art know-how for cultural institutions e.g. in the field of new media and audience development.
The IMZ Academy discusses important questions like: What are success factors for an online launch of cultural institutions? How can you best convey emotion and make connections via new media channels? What are possible ways of audience development for cultural institutions using new media? What kind of visual vocabulary is needed to be successful in this online world?

The IMZ Academy offers 1-3 day-intensive training sessions on the topics of current importance for the cultural film industry to enhance knowledge but also to open up new opportunities for cooperation and promote intercultural exchange. The sessions are conducted in small groups of up to 20 participants in order to ensure that every attendee is fully involved in the course and the practical sessions and gets detailed feedback on his or her learning process.
The IMZ Academy is led by Peter Maniura who is Head of Digital Development at BBC Arts, a Board Member of Opera North and a film and programme maker. Additionally, a team of experienced experts mentors the class. The aim is to develop and strengthen skills and expertise and further to empower the cultural and creative sector via interdisciplinary collaborations and sustainable networks.
