As the advocacy group for the performing arts film industry, the IMZ International Music + Media Centre is committed to ensuring a thriving and sustainable future for this specialised sector. The IMZ Academy is one of our initiatives to promote the professionalisation of the music + dance film sector.

Led by IMZ Academy Director Peter Maniura, Head of Digital Development at BBC Music and Board Member at Opera North, the IMZ Academy invites experienced practitioners and renowned experts in filmmaking, broadcasting, new media and the performing arts to share their know-how with participants.

The IMZ Academy is designed to equip professionals with industry-specific skills in accordance with newly arising challenges and opportunities in performing arts + audiovisual media. Due to the ever evolving and developing best practice in this area, the IMZ Academy hence addresses the training needs of young professionals and established market players, alike.
Another objective of the IMZ Academy is to offer specific state-of-the-art know-how for cultural institution in the fields of new media and audience development through digital content.
The IMZ Academy is committed to delivering hands-on experiences and applicable input: Expert speakers share their professional insights using real-life examples and concrete challenges. Moreover, the IMZ Academy enables peer learning and mutual exchange with other participants from all over the world.

Sustainable networks for an empowered cultural sector

Apart from knowledge transfer, the second goal of the IMZ Academy is to further empower the cultural and creative sector. With small group sizes, team activities and social gatherings, IMZ Academies are specifically designed to serve as a platform for connecting with peers from all over the world. Bringing together professionals from different backgrounds and institutions, the IMZ Academy also aims at promoting intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange, fostering professional networks and opening up new opportunities for collaborations. 

The IMZ Academy Learning Approach

IMZ Academies are held in small groups of up to 30 participants in order to ensure that every attendee is fully involved in the course. The learning experience is enhanced with practical, real life case studies. Moreover, workshop sessions are an important element in the IMZ Academy approach, allowing participants to work in small groups on concrete challenges and future-facing initiatives. Furthermore, the mutual exchange between IMZ Academy participants from all over the world broadens the horizon, sparks new ideas and enables participants to learn from the experience of their international peers.
