IMZ Academy 2019: “The complete performer of the future – Embracing media skills in music education”

In cooperation with and at Music + Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK), Vienna/Austria, supported by AEC – Association Européenne des Conservatoires

What kind of mindset and skills beyond musical excellence do classical performers need to thrive in our ever-increasing digital world and how can these be trained by Conservatoires?
This IMZ Academy established the importance of media skills for the next generation of musicians and explored how the music education of the future should adapt its syllabus to prepare students effectively for the opportunities + challenges of the digital realm.

The following leading experts examined today’s multi-media musical landscape and assessed the implications for Higher Music Education Institutions from all angles:

  • Peter Maniura, IMZ Academy Director, provided an overview of the current digital + media landscape and presented specific case studies in the use of digital + social media.
  • Miranda Harmer, Chair at Conservatoires UK Student Network, examined the student perspective and reflected on the positive impact of media skills on her musical career.
  • John Kieser, Executive Vice President and Provost at New World Symphony, shared his distinctive expertise in integrating technology + digital into master postgraduate studies and discussed curriculum considerations as well as actual training sessions.
  • Yury Revich, Violinist, shed light on his standpoint and illustrated how media skills are a key component in his career strategy, using his successful social media promotion strategy for his concert series “Friday Nights with Yury Revich”.
  • Christopher Widauer, Head of Digital Development at Vienna State Opera, elaborated on the employers’ perspectives and presented the multitude of new career opportunities for musicians trained in media skills.
  • Martin Zimper, Head of Cast / Audiovisual Media at Design Department of the Zurich University of the Arts, explained how he successfully established a transdisciplinary course focusing on audiovisual media, social media and online strategies for audience engagement.

PETER MANIURA

Peter Maniura

IMZ Academy Director

Peter Maniura is an award-winning TV producer and director with more than twenty five years of experience in music and arts broadcasting at the BBC and the EBU. He is also a digital media consultant and guest lecturer. His most recent role at the BBC was Project Director, Classical Archive and Orchestras Digital Strategy for BBC Music; opening up the BBC’S unique music archive to the public in new ways. Prior to this he was Head of Digital Development for BBC Arts covering festivals, events and performance across the art forms. He was also commissioner for BBC Arts Online, which he launched in May 2014. Previously he was Creative Director and Curator of the new experimental BBC/Arts Council England digital online arts service ‘The Space’ which launched in May 2012 promoting digital innovation and creativity in the arts.

Miranda Harmer

Chair at Conservatoires UK Student Network

Nominated as “One to Watch” in the Northern Power Women Awards 2018, Mimi is a postgraduate student at Leeds College of Music, currently studying composition and cello performance. She is the current Chair at Conservatoires UK Student Network and was recently appointed as an Ambassador for the Creative Industries Federation in 2018, as well as an external expert for the Association of European Conservatoires in 2019.

John Kieser

Executive Vice President and Provost at New World Symphony

Since 2015, John oversees Musician Advancement, Communications, Community, Audience Engagement, and Digital Media at the New World Symphony. His work in developing concert formats is designed to both attract new audiences and develop the skills of the Fellows. Prior to this, John was with the San Francisco Symphony as General Manager where his responsibilities included strategic planning and management of presentations, facilities, capital improvements, touring, retail and union negotiations. While at the San Francisco Symphony, he created SFS Media, which has produced the multi-media project Keeping Score and also won many Grammy© Awards as well as Emmy Awards for The San Francisco Symphony at 100 and Sweeney Todd.

Yury Revich

Violinist

In his twenties, violinist Yury Revich is already a multi-faceted artist of incredible depth, maturity and creativity. Winner of an ECHO Klassik 2016 “Newcomer of the Year” award, “Young Artist of the Year 2015” at the International Classical Music Awards and “Young Musician of the Year” by the Beethoven Center Vienna, he is one of the most expressive and versatile musicians of his generation. At the age of 18, Yury made his debut at Carnegie Hall with Daniil Trifonov, later on in La Scala with Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and his concerts since then have included performances at the Berlin Philharmonie, Berlin Konzerthaus, Vienna Musikverein, Zurich Tonhalle, Vienna Konzerthaus, Leipzig Gewandhaus, BOZAR Brussels and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall Moscow amongst many others. His recordings to date are featured on labels such as Sony Classical as well as a recording with ARS records, for which he won his ECHO Klassik Award. He also lives out his creativity in the film medium and has studied directing, acting and has already produced two short films of his own.

Christopher Widauer

Head of Digital Development at Vienna State Opera

Christopher Widauer has a background as Lecturer at the Salzburg University and Director of international music festivals. In 2010 he joined Vienna's City Commissioner for Cultural Affairs as Head of Performing Arts Department, where he developed a Digital Cultural Content Strategy before becoming Head of Digital Development at the Vienna State Opera. In this function, he and his teams established the Vienna State Opera as a fully independent producer and distributor of high-class full HD digital content. Christopher was responsible for the design and setup of state of the art infrastructure - remote cameras, new audio and video studios, inhouse watermarking, encoding and transcoding technology -, the development of a complex software solution with backend, CMS, website, mobile and SmartTV Apps and synchronized Second Screen content, and was in charge of recruiting and training new staff members and setting up appropriate workflows.

Martin Zimper

Head of Cast / Audiovisual Media at Design Department of the Zurich University of the Arts

Martin is Founder and Head of Cast/ Audiovisual Media in the Design Department of the Zurich University of the Arts. His field of studies researches, experiments and teaches on the edge of audiovisual media and social media. His students and staff create, produce and distribute audiovisual stories for screen-based devices from tablets to VR glasses. Furthermore, Martin created the 5-day-course “Social Media for artists and designers” at Zurich University of the Arts, produced a social media based livestream of “Concours Géza Anda” (International pianist’s award), won “Best of Swiss App” (Category Entertainment) with an iPad-App for the Opera House Zurich, and was Executive Producer of 29 Art Docs for the European ArtBiennial “Manifesta11”.
