IMZ Academy Workshop 2025: LIVE MULTI-CAMERA DIRECTING OF BALLET AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE PERFORMANCES

The IMZ Academy Workshop 2025 provides directors, filmmakers and members of a digital + production team in dance companies, opera houses or broadcast media a chance to master advanced skills and become a key player in the international cultural film business!

 

Under the tutelage of three award-winning international directors Peter Maniura, Thomas Freundlich and Myriam Hoyer participants will learn how to film ballet and contemporary dance at the state-of-the art Tanssin Talo (Dance House) in Helsinki. Additionally, the hands-on workshop is a unique chance to work with the leading Finnish choreographer Valtteri Raekallio and dancers from his company Raekallio Corp. Every participant will have the opportunity to rehearse and record a short dance work with the artists.

 

This course provides training for: 

  • directors who have never worked in multi-camera ballet or dance capture and would like to develop those skills 

  • directors who have some experience of working in music or dance and would like to expand these skills and receive some formal training 

  • single camera directors / filmmakers who would like to develop multi-camera skills specifically focused on ballet and dance 

  • members of digital teams in ballet or dance companies or other music organisations who want to gain an initial grounding in these skills 

  • members of digital or production teams in broadcast media who wish to expand their skills base

 


The course aims to:  

  • outline best practices in visualising, scripting, and directing ballet and modern dance with a multi-camera set-up and single camera set-up using both manned and remote-control camera  

  • analyse the skill set of a director and good gallery technique  

  • explain how to camera script dance, explaining the grammar and the basis of a camera script; including the framing of shots, the development of sequences, musical and dramatic narrative, placing of cameras etc.  

  • describe commonly used camera types and lenses 

  • offer hands-on scripting and directing experience  

  • offer guidance and critique of the scripting and directing set tasks
