IMZ Academy in Helsinki

This presentation introduces the IMZ Academy Workshop 2025, an opportunity for directors, filmmakers, and digital production teams in the performing arts and media industries. Hosted at Helsinki’s Dance House, participants will learn to film ballet and contemporary dance under the guidance of award-winning directors Peter Maniura, Thomas Freundlich, and Myriam Hoyer.

Myriam Hoyer
Freelance multi-camera Director of Dance + Opera
Myriam Hoyer is an award-winning multi-camera director specialising in ballet and opera broadcasts. She studied piano and music theatre direction at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, Berlin. With over 90 films for Arte, Mezzo, ORF, and more, she crafts vibrant cinematic translations of performances. Since 2016, she has collaborated closely with choreographers Mats Ek (Utvandrarna) and John Neumeier (Beethoven Project, Ghost Light).

Peter Maniura
Freelance Director + Digital Strategist, IMZ Academy Director
Peter is an award-winning TV producer and director with over 25 years of experience in music and arts broadcasting, formerly at the BBC and EBU. He has led digital initiatives, including BBC Arts Online and ‘The Space.’ As Project Director for BBC Music, he expanded public access to the BBC’s music archive. A digital media consultant and guest lecturer, he continues to shape innovation in the arts.

Thomas Freundlich
Filmmaker + Cinematographer + Producer, CEO + Creative Lead - Lumikinos Production
Thomas Freundlich is an acclaimed dance filmmaker and one of Finland’s most awarded short film directors. A former choreographer and dancer, he creates dance shorts, documentaries, multi-camera productions, and projection designs. His work has been shown at over 350 festivals and broadcast on Arte, Yle, SVT, and more. His short Cold Storage (2016) won 44 awards and was Finland’s most screened short film (2017–2019).

Valtteri Raekallio
Artistic Director - Helsinki Dance Company
Valtteri Raekallio is a leading Finnish choreographer and artistic director of Helsinki Dance Company. His work blends multiple art forms, from immersive site-specific performances to stage and film projects. An internationally sought-after teacher, he has performed in nearly 100 productions across 40 countries. He has received numerous awards, including the Finland Prize (2019) and the City of Helsinki Artist of the Year award.
